No summer in Detroit is complete without attending the Michigan Glass Project (MGP): a three day festival with live music, glass blowing and more!
MGP started as an idea to bring together local glass blowers in order to raise money for the Belle Isle Aquarium. The nonprofit raised a total of $36,000 from 2012 to 2014 through their annual fundraising event, and that number has grown each year since. This year, their fundraising goal amounts to $125,000.
Part of the force behind the event’s success is Allison Key, President and Executive Director of the Michigan Glass Project. While attending school at Northern University with plans to go on to medical school, Key found her passion in glass blowing on her visits home.
“I’m not on the torch much anymore,” said Key. “My personal artwork has become making events happen.”
MGP now raises money for Art Road, a nonprofit organization that provides art classes to elementary schools in Detroit at no cost to the school. MGP’s fundraising has allowed Art Road to expand to Spain Elementary Middle School and Vernor Elementary School in recent years.
This year’s Michigan Glass Project will take place July 20–22 at the Russell Industrial center. Those interested in attending may purchase a single day pass for $15, or a weekend pass for $30.
Artists working with the Michigan Glass Project will donate their artwork for it to be auctioned off. Many artists enjoy participating because it allows them to connect with other artists.
“In the glass scene everyone has their own style,” Key said. “When you get all those guys in one place, they start to do collaboration pieces that become a mash up of their styles.”
The Michigan Glass Project is looking for volunteers to donate art, assist with set up for the event, and help with the many activities that take place. Those looking to volunteer may apply at www.themichiganglassproject.com/volunteer
